Utica residents will speak out at a public hearing Wednesday evening, where the Utica Planning Commission and Village Board will consider a petition for a proposed quarry that will be used to mine sand for hydraulic fracturing in Illinois.

Aramoni LLC wants Utica’s permission to quarry on 500 acres near the Starved Rock tourist village. Many local residents are opposed to the quarry, citing health concerns and a fear that the environmental consequences will negatively impact tourism in the area.

Dr. Crispin Pierce, an expert on the sand used in the process of hydraulic fracturing, will speak at a public hearing Wednesday night in Utica, Illinois. Dr. Pierce works as a professor in the department of Environmental Public Health at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. He will be joined by Dr. Ron Koshoshek, Emeritus Professor of Ethics from UW-Eau Claire and citizen advocate.

The hearing will take place 6 pm, Wednesday, January 15th at the Grand Bear Lodge in Utica.
